Stable cottage is off the beaten track, where you can enjoy
the splendour and tranquillity of Rosedale. The location will
appeal to walkers, cyclists and those who love being in the
heart of the countryside. Horse riding and pony trekking are
available in the village of Rosedale Abbey.
In the late 19th and early 20th centuries both East and West
Rosedale were locations for iron ore mining. Many relics of
this industry remain visible and accessible, including the
site of the Sheriff Pit, on the ridge immediately behind Stable
Cottage. Indeed, at one time, the horses used to haul the
pit wagons were stabled at Medds Farm.
The old railway tracks used for the mines are now maintained
as footpaths from which magnificent views of the dale are
to be had. There are many other footpaths and ancient trods
in the dale, providing the opportunity for a variety of walks.
Beyond the dale there is good access to longer walks to Farndale,
Spaunton Moor, High Danby Moor and Glaisdale Head and to villages
at Hutton-le-Hole,Cropton and Lastingham.
Rosedale is at the very heart of the North York Moors National
Park with its many visitor attractions. It is only a short
drive to be in Heartbeat or Herriot country. It is also convenient
for access to the spectacular North Yorkshire Heritage coastline.
Whitby, Scarborough and Robin Hoods Bay are just some of the
places to be visited.
In the village of Rosedale Abbey there is a post office,
bakers, newsagent and two tearooms. Milk and groceries are
available. The three pubs in the village all provide bar snacks
and meals. There are many more tea rooms, restaurants and
pubs in the surrounding area. A wider range of shops is available
at Kirkbymoorside (8 miles) and Pickering (12 miles).
Incidentally, there is no mobile phone reception in Rosedale
- you will know whether this is a curse or a blessing!
